  10. (a note on the chief rules of practical conduct to  be  observed
  11. by those who accept the Law of Thelema.)

  13.           "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law."
  14.           "There is no law beyond Do what thou wilt."
  15.           "...thou hast  no  right  but to do thy will.  Do that
  16.           and no other shall say nay.  For pure will, unassuaged
  17.           of purpose, delivered from  the  lust  of  result,  is
  18.           every way perfect."
  19.           "Love is the law, love under will."
  20.           "Every man and every woman is a star."

  23. A. YOUR DUTY TO YOURSELF
  24.  
  25.   1. Find yourself to be the centre of your own Universe
  26.  
  27.           "I  am the flame that burns in every heart of man, and
  28.           in the core of every star."
  29.  
  30.   2. Explore the Nature and Powers of your own Being.
  31.  
  32.           This includes everything which is, or can be for  you:
  33.           and  you  must  accept  everything exactly as it is in
  34.           itself, as one of the factors which go to make up your
  35.           True Self.  This True Self  thus  ultimately  includes
  36.           all  things  soever:  its discovery is Initiation (the
  37.           travelling inwards) and  as  its  Nature  is  to  move
  38.           continually,  it must be understood not as static, but
  39.           as dynamic, not as a Noun but as a Verb.

  41.   3. Develop in due harmony and proportion every faculty which
  42.      you possess.
  43.  
  44.           "Wisdom says: be strong!"
  45.           "But exceed! exceed!"
  46.           "Be strong, o man, lust, enjoy all things of sense and
  47.           rapture: fear not that any God  shall  deny  thee  for
  48.           this"
  49.  
  50.   4. Contemplate your own Nature.
  51.  
  52.           Consider  every element thereof both separately and in
  53.           relation to all the rest as to  judge  accurately  the
  54.           true purpose of the totality of your Being.
  55.  
  56.   5. Find the formula of this purpose, or "True Will", in an
  57.      expression as simple as possible.
  58.  
  59.          Leave to understand clearly how best to manipulate the
  60.           energies  which you control to obtain the results most
  61.           favourable to it from its relations with the  part  of
  62.           the Universe which you do not yet control.
  63.  
  64.    6. Extend the dominion of your consciousness, and its control
  65.      of all forces alien to it, to the utmost.
  66.  
  67.           Do   this  by  the  ever  stronger  and  more  skilful
  68.           application of your faculties to the  finer,  clearer,
  69.           fuller,  and  more  accurate  perception,  the  better
  70.           understanding, and the more wisely ordered government,
  71.           of that external Universe.
  72.  
  73.   7. Never permit the thought or will of any other Being to
  74.      interfere with your own.
  75.  
  76.           Be constantly vigilant to resent, and on the alert  to
  77.           resist,  with  unvanquishable  ardour and vehemence of
  78.           passion unquenchable, every attempt of any other Being
  79.           to influence you otherwise than  by  contributing  new
  80.           facts  to  your  experience  of  the  Universe,  or by
  81.           assisting you to reach a higher synthesis of Truth  by
  82.           the mode of passionate fusion.
  83.  
  84.   8. Do not repress or restrict any true instinct of your
  85.      Nature; but devote all in perfection to the sole service of
  86.      your one True Will.
  87.  
  88.           "Be goodly therefore"
  89.           "The Word  of  Sin  is Restriction.  O man! refuse not
  90.           thy wife if she will.  O lover, if thou wilt,  depart.
  91.           There  is no bond that can unite the divided but love:
  92.           all else is a curse.  Accursed!  Accursed!  be  it  to
  93.           the aeons.  Hell.  So with thy all: thou hast no right
  94.           but to  do  thy  will.  Do that and no other shall say
  95.           nay.  For pure will, unassuaged of purpose,  delivered
  96.           from the lust of result, is every way perfect."
  97.           "Ye  shall gather goods and store of women and Spices;
  98.           ye shall exceed the nations of the earth is  Splendour
  99.           & pride; but always in the love of me, and so shall ye
  100.           come to my joy."

  102.   9. Rejoice!
  103.  
  104.           "Remember  all ye that existence is pure joy; that all
  105.           the sorrows are but shadows; they pass & are done; but
  106.           there is that which remains."
  107.           "But ye, o my people, rise up  and  awake!    Let  the
  108.           rituals  be rightly performed with joy and beauty! ...
  109.           A feast for fire and a feast for water;  a  feast  for
  110.           life and a greater feast for death!  A feast every day
  111.           in your  hearts  in  the  joy  of my rapture.  A feast
  112.           every night unto Nuit, and the pleasure  of  uttermost
  113.           delight.   Aye!  feast!  rejoice!  there  is  no dread
  114.           hereafter.   There  is  no  dissolution  and   eternal
  115.           ecstacy in the kisses of Nu."
  116.           "Now  rejoice!  now come in our splendour and rapture!
  117.           Come in our passionate peace, & write sweet words  for
  118.           the Kings!"
  119.           "Thrill with  the  joy of life & death!  Ah! thy death
  120.           shall be lovely: whose seeth it shall be  glad.    Thy
  121.           death  shall be the seal of the promise of our agelong
  122.           love.  Come! lift up thy heart & rejoice!"
  123.           "Is God to live in a dog?  No! but the highest are  of
  124.           us.   They shall rejoice: who sorroweth is not of use.
  125.           Beauty and strength, leaping  laughter  and  delicious
  126.           langour, force and fire, are of us."

  128. B. YOUR DUTY TO OTHER INDIVIDUAL MEN AND WOMEN
  129.  
  130.   1. "Love is the law, love under will."
  131.  
  132.           Unite  yourself  passionately with every other form of
  133.           consciousness,   thus   destroying   the   sense    of
  134.           seperateness  from  the  Whole,  and  creating  a  new
  135.           base-line in the Universe from which to measure it.
  136.  
  137.   2. "As brothers fight ye."
  138.  
  139.           "If he be a king thou canst not hurt him."
  140.           To bring out saliently  the  differences  between  two
  141.           points-of-view  is  useful  to  both  in measuring the
  142.           position of each in the whole.  Combat stimulates  the
  143.           virile or creative energy; and, like love, of which it
  144.           is  one  form,  excites  the  mind  to an orgasm which
  145.           enables it to transcend its rational dullness.
  146.  
  147.   3. Abstain from all interferences with other wills.
  148.  
  149.           "Beware lest any force another, King against King!"
  150.           (The love and war in the previous injunctions  are  of
  151.           the  nature  of  sport, where one respects, and learns
  152.           from the opponent,  but  never  interferes  with  him,
  153.           outside  the  actual  game.)  To  seek  to dominate or
  154.           influence another is to seek to deform or destroy him;
  155.           and he is a necessary part of one's own Universe, that
  156.           is, of one's self.
  157.  
  158.   4. Seek, if you so will, to enlighten another when need
  159.      arises.
  160.  
  161.           This may be done, always with the strict  respect  for
  162.           the  attitude  of  the  good  sportsman, when he is in
  163.           distress  through  failure   to   understand   himself
  164.           clearly, especially when he specifically demands help;
  165.           for  his  darkness  may hinder one's perception of his
  166.           perfection. (Yet also his  darkness  may  serve  as  a
  167.           warning,  or excite one's interest.) It is also lawful
  168.           when his ignorance has  lead  him  to  interfere  with
  169.           one's will.      All   interference  is  in  any  case
  170.           dangerous, and demands the exercise of  extreme  skill
  171.           and good  judgement,  fortified  by  experience.    To
  172.           influence another is to leave one's citadel unguarded;
  173.           and the attempt commonly  ends  in  losing  one's  own
  174.           self-supremacy.

  176.   5. Worship all!
